Reporting to the Mailroom Supervisor, this position works in the Mailroom at a multi custody male correctional facility. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Processing, reviewing, and distributing all outgoing mail, packages, legal, certified, and courier mail.
Maintaining security of the facility by searching/reviewing all incoming/outgoing mail for unauthorized items/contraband, and correspondence deemed a threat to the safety, security, and orderly function of the facility.
Making daily deliveries to and pickup from the local post office.
Processing over 850 pieces of mail and interoffice correspondence daily.
Entering money orders, cashier/certified checks received for offenders into offender bank accounts along with cashier/certified checks received for offenders into the offender banking system.
Having contact with offenders, facility staff and general public.
Requiring lifting of mail bags and packages up to 50 pounds.
Requiring, within 6 months of employment, certification as Notary Public.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range will be $31,200 – $49,340. Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do no need to reapply.

The salary grade for this position is NC02 (Salary Range: $31,200 – $49,340). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry, or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors, and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or other worship services.
