Job Description

The Iowa Employment Appeal Board (IEAB) is hiring an Administrative Assistant 2 with expertise in unemployment insurance to join our team. In this role, you will provide essential customer service, guide individuals through our appeal processes, and evaluate legal issues for Board review. While not required, paralegal or unemployment insurance experience is preferred for this position.

Position Overview

As an Administrative Assistant 2, you will work under the supervision of the Board members and the Director of Administrative Operations at our office near Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa. You will be responsible for providing prompt and correct, written or verbal, information regarding our process, unemployment insurance, and public employee collective bargaining elections to the public and other interested parties. You will also be responsible for promptly and correctly docketing appeals for the Board which includes, but is not limited to, identifying the correct parties and determining what legal issues will go before the Board.

Responsibilities

You will be an integral member of our team, providing leadership and guidance to the department in support of the agency’s operations by:

  • Assisting with new, recertification, or decertification elections related to public collective bargaining.
  • Reviewing appeals and notifying parties of the issues to go before the Board.
  • Preparing acknowledgment letters and drafting emails to go to parties.
  • Providing customer service over the phone to the parties appearing before the Board and members of the public.
  • Providing clerical support to the attorneys for cases that are appealed to District Court, Iowa Court of Appeals, and the Iowa Supreme Court.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in any field, and experience equal to one year of full-time administrative support (e.g., screening visitors and callers; opening/distributing mail, typing/proofing documents, letters, and reports; organizing files; scheduling meetings/appointments; arranging travel; processing travel claims; ordering supplies/equipment) or technical support work (e.g., determining budget, personnel, and equipment needs; compiling/evaluating statistical, historical, economic, business, financial or technical program data; interpreting or securing compliance with laws, rules and regulations; reviewing operating records/reports and evaluating their effectiveness).
  • A total of five years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one) where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to 12 months of full-time work as an Administrative Assistant 1.
