Position Summary
The Administrative Support Coordinator I provides support to the Director and Associate Director of the Center for Latin American Studies in the College of Arts and Letters. The Administrative Coordinator’s work is supervised by the Director and should be carried out within the policies set by the Center and the Director. This position requires fluency in English and Spanish and working knowledge of Portuguese or one of the Indigenous languages taught through the Center.
The Administrative Support Coordinator is responsible for office lead and clerical operations necessary for assisting in accomplishing the administrative goals of the Center. These include planning and overseeing budgetary and fiscal matters, course scheduling, processing paperwork for faculty appointments and annual reviews, interpreting academic and administrative regulations and policies, and gathering data for grant and fellowship applications. They will also assist with the preparation and administration of grant proposals, overseeing grant budgets, assisting in the preparation of graduate student applications for review, assisting committees including review committees for travel and other grant funding for students and faculty, hiring and supervising student employees, overseeing the maintenance of the department’s website, planning and organizing events, completing annual reports to granting agencies, and securing visas and other documents for international visiting scholars.
The Administrative Support Coordinator will assist the Director in the development of publicity materials, the development and maintenance of links with external institutions, and the coordination of efforts between the Center for Latin American Studies and other organizations.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
Over the years, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) has grown to be a regional center for the acquisition of information on the politics, history, cultures, languages, and contemporary phenomenon of Latin America. The Center demonstrates its effectiveness through such activities as guest lectures, film screenings, major conferences, visiting international faculty and student exchange programs, development and administration of Indigenous language and culture programming, a quarterly newsletter, outreach programming to K-14 institutions and educators, and the coordination of library purchases.
The Center’s functions include the development of grant funding and administration, development of Indigenous language and culture instruction, ongoing curricular development, internships within San Diego, in Mexico, and in other areas of Latin America for the College and larger University, study abroad programming during the academic year and summer located throughout Latin America, academic exchange programs with COLEF, UABC Norte, and multiple universities and agencies in O…
