Associate Attorney Jobs in Centerville, USA at Houck Menninger Law, LLC
HM Law is a boutique estate planning and elder law firm based in Centerville, Ohio. We help individuals and families navigate the full arc of life planning — from foundational estate and elder law plans to complex trust administration, probate, and business succession matters. We take the work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously, and we are growing intentionally to meet increasing client demand.
THE
OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an Associate Attorney to join our team with a primary focus on probate and estate administration, supported by meaningful involvement in trust administration coordination and foundational estate planning work. This role is well-suited for an attorney who is comfortable managing matters from intake through closing, working alongside paralegals and legal support staff, and engaging directly with clients and courts.
It is an opportunity to build a substantive practice in a firm that values both professional growth and a collaborative workplace culture.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage estate administration matters from initial intake through final closing, including testate and intestate estates.
- Prepare and file all required probate court documents, including applications, inventories, accountings, and closing filings.
- Appear at probate court hearings and interact with court staff as needed.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of the firm’s paralegal(s) and legal support specialist on estate administration matters.
- Communicate proactively with executors, administrators, beneficiaries, and other parties throughout the administration process.
- Identify and escalation complex issues — including contested matters, creditor disputes, and fiduciary concerns — appropriately.
TRUST ADMINISTRATION
- Serve as the primary coordinator for the firm’s trust settlement and ongoing trust administration matters.
- Work collaboratively with the firm’s elder law partner and legal support team to ensure trust matters are managed on a timely and organized basis.
- Perform substantive trust administration work, including trustee correspondence, accountings, distribution memos, and notice requirements.
- Monitor the status of open trust administration matters and flag issues requiring attorney attention.
- Conduct client intake meetings and estate plan review meetings under the supervision of firm partners.
- Draft foundational estate planning documents, including wills, revocable trusts, durable powers of attorney, and advance directives.
- Assist with the trust funding process, including coordinating asset transfers and beneficiary designation updates.
- Support the firm’s estate planning practice as capacity and experience develop.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Active Ohio bar admission required. Candidates awaiting bar results may be considered in limited circumstances.
- Two or more years of experience in probate, estate administration, or trusts and estates preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple open matters simultaneously with attention to detail and consistent follow-through.
- Experience with probate court filings and hearings in Ohio preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to clients.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general comfort learning firm-specific software and systems.
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach to legal practice.
