SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Caseworker III – Public Defender assists attorneys in the preparation of criminal cases for defense by the public defender.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Monitorsquality controlof case process. Identifies problems. Develops, implements and monitors new and revised operational policies and work procedures.

Provides backup for caseworker II as needed.

Serves as the criminal/civil divisions supervisor in the absence of the office manager.

Supervises the training of new or relocated professional and support staff in conjunction with the office manager.

Serves as a liaison between the public defender, deputy public defenders, local and out-of-town attorneys, judges, secretaries, investigators, interpreters, law and various enforcement agencies, victims, witnesses, defendants, treatment facilities, clerks of the courts, caseworkers, representatives of other agencies and other county departments on case management and investigation.

Communicates information clearly and concisely, imparting the knowledge necessary to obtain the desired result.

Consults and assists attorneys in case preparation, investigation, and research. Locates defendants and other parties of interest when they are uncooperative but essential witnesses.

Assists attorneys with miscellaneous correspondence, letters, legal documents and discovery to the appropriate parties and other matters as assigned.

Prepares case files.

Calendars court hearings, meetings, and appointments. Coordinates, manages, and assigns cases in the eleven courts among the public defender’s attorney staff ensuring statutory time limits are met.

Coordinates and calendars staff meetings, trainings and other as assigned.

Answers incoming telephone calls. Provides information or routes calls as appropriate.

Makes and confirms travel reservations for witnesses. Calculates amount of compensation checks to be presented upon their arrival.

Ensures case information is accurate and available for statistical analysis upon entering full dispositions on closed cases. Removes physical files from the open filing system and refiles in the closed system.

Reviews and resolves older criminal cases for destruction.

Attends various meetings, conferences, and workshops.

Manages, trains, monitors, and evaluates the performance of assigned staff.

Prepares clear and concise reports, records and statistics on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis as requested or needed.

Prepares and understands various correspondence and legal documents in a manner that is accurate, acceptable, and understandable to public, other agencies and the courts.

Develops, writes, and implements office procedures. Establishes and maintains work production standards.

Analyzes, evaluates, and resolves problems relating to casework and support staff.

Implements, controls, and revises inter-office forms or templates.

Develops training procedures for staff.

Updates the public defender, deputy public defenders and the office manager on work status and important developments they may need to know in order to function effectively.

Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
