Crown Court Clerk

Our Crown Court Clerks are essential to ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly. You will speak confidently in court, communicate with the Judge and all participants, and produce accurate and timely Court documents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Speak publicly in court and liaise with the Judge, defence, prosecution, media and members of the public.
  • Ensure the smooth running of all the Crown Courts sitting daily, intervening in Court when required and maximising judicial sitting time.
  • Produce exact, time‑critical documentation, including Court orders and hearing outcomes, accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain a non‑judgemental, calm and professional approach to complex and sensitive matters.
  • Adapt to new systems and technologies as HMCTS invests in digital solutions.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Experience speaking publicly in a court‑room environment.
  • Accuracy in completing documents to deadlines.
  • IT proficiency with the ability to learn and adapt to different technologies and software packages.
  • High emotional resilience and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Working Hours and Location

Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week. Part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing arrangements are considered in accordance with the MoJ Flexible Working policy, provided the role can be carried out fully in the UK.

All employees are expected to spend a minimum of 60 % of working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
