The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) facilitates the efficient functioning of a patient care unit by performing receptionist and clerical/non-clinical support activities. The HUC has knowledge of age-specific needs of the patient population.
Responsibilities
Teamwork/Collaboration: Working effectively with the team/work group to accomplish daily tasks, achieve goals, and promote group cohesiveness.
Communication/Coordination: Supports the patient care environment by communicating clearly, courteously, and effectively, both verbally and in writing, while maintaining confidentiality. Provides prompt communication to patients, visitors, and staff. Uses hospital information systems to inform about patient activity, coordinate with services, and facilitate interdepartmental communication, including paging during emergencies.
Clerical Support: Provides clerical support under nursing supervision, including assembling patient charts, preparing documents for procedures, managing patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, and assisting with scheduling and discharge processes. Maintains documentation accuracy and adheres to organizational policies. Assists clinicians by retrieving information via EPIC and other systems, and completes annual competencies.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. HUC education from college or vocational school preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years of customer service experience preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
Initiative and self-motivation
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management
Effective time management and multitasking
Knowledge of medical terminology (preferred)
Completion of mandatory safety and hospital education
BLS certification (training provided if not certified at hire)
