Essential Job Functions
The Judiciary Clerk performs case processing duties and responsibilities daily which entails a high volume of data entry work for Cecil County District Court. Process Domestic Violence and Peace Order filings and update Odyssey (electronic case management system). This position acts as a back‑up cashier accepting monies for fines, costs, and fees. This position is considered essential personnel.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Provides customer service to general public and court related personnel at the counter and over the telephone.
- Respond to inquiries regarding completion of various court related forms and information regarding court policies and procedures.
- Accept monies for fines, costs, and filing fees.
- Process all types of post‑judgment civil filings such as notice of liens, oral examinations, show cause orders, appeals, and bank and wage garnishments.
- Process new civil cases and pre‑judgment filings.
- All filings are processed through electronic case management system (MDEC/Odyssey).
- Process domestic violence, peace orders, and emergency evaluations.
Education
High School diploma or GED equivalent. A bachelor’s degree may substitute the required work experience.
Experience
One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Qualifications and Substitutions
- A Paralegal/associate’s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
- A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- General office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
- Basic English and arithmetic including spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Use standard office and business equipment including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
- Maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
- Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
- Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
Physical Requirements
Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Equipment, Machinery And Tools
Computer, calculator, fax, copier, cash register, time/date machine, postage meter, telephone, vital check equipment, scanner, and shredder. This equipment is necessary to perform my daily job duties of data entry, taking payments, mailing information, and communications with the Courts.
Software And Computer Skills
RCS/MDEC Cashiering System, Odyssey plus others used by the Judiciary including Microsoft Office Programs. CONNECT.
