The Legal Secretary will perform complex legal secretarial work assisting professional legal staff of the District Attorney’s Office, assuming responsibility for all related work including but not limited to:

Transcribes difficult dictation involving legal terminology and brief preparation for the appellate court, and local judges; meets deadlines imposed by statute or court. Keeps all information confidential.

Prepares replies and other correspondence, without dictation in accordance with established procedures.

Prepares routine documents in criminal court proceedings.

Prepares car forfeiture actions.

Maintains records of decline to prosecute cases.

Maintains calendar of court hearings in District Attorney court cases.

Assists attorneys in meeting statutory and court deadlines.

Answers telephone, gives information, and handles other agency and public contact.

Assembles files and other materials to facilitate progress of legal actions.

Efficiently manage and organize all closed criminal files and keep log of same.

Relays information to the general public and county agencies regarding actions and determinations.

Sorts, indexes and files material alphabetically, numerically, or by any other pre-determined classification.

Assists in Criminal Division legal work when need arises including criminal complaints and search warrant and John Doe back-up.

Direct back up to Criminal & Traffic Paralegal Aide.

Performs other duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Three or more years experience in the District Attorney’s Office.

Ability to type 60 words per minute accurately.

Comprehensive knowledge of office practices and procedures and business English.

Advanced proficiency in computer software, including word processing and other specialized software pertaining to the operations of the office.

Ability to independently prepare legal documents and independently write detailed and concise reports.

Ability to transcribe dictation rapidly and accurately.

Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.

Needs to use good judgment, tact and courtesy.

Ability to abide by office procedures and to keep all information confidential.
