Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is excited to begin its hiring process for The Excel Center. For those less familiar with The Excel Center, it provides tuition-free education for adults seeking to obtain a high school diploma. The Excel Center model was created by the Goodwill in Indianapolis in 2010, and has since grown to 47 schools across 10 states and Washington D.C. Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois will open the first Excel Center in Illinois in Fall 2025. We are currently seeking to hire The Excel Center Enrollment Specialist.
The Excel Center will be located at the YMCA in Rockford on Y Boulevard; however, the position will initially be housed at the Goodwill Home Office; 850 N. Church St in Rockford.
The Excel Center Office Assistant is responsible for the organization and coordination of office operations, procedures and resources to facilitate organizational effectiveness and efficiency of The Excel Center. Works closely with staff and students to supervise and maintain orderly operations for the school. The Office Assistant is the first point of contact for many students; thus, this position requires a strong focus on customer service with a can-do, professional attitude and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
Student Support & Relationships
Serves as first point of contact, greeting students and staff with a positive, friendly attitude.
Manages bus pass and gas card ordering and distribution.
Manages on-site enrollment for new students including troubleshooting and decision making in accordance with The Excel Center student expectations.
Assists with new student orientation.
Acts as a liaison between students, enrollees, families, staff and community partners.
Assists with student and staff scheduling where applicable.
Administrative Support
Oversees various documentation and ensures that records are properly maintained.
Coordinates needed work orders in the areas of security, housekeeping, and maintenance.
Coordinates travel arrangements.
Collects and distributes mail daily.
Orders, maintains, and tracks inventory of office equipment and supplies.
Creates and maintains staff directory and school calendar.
Collaborates with registrars to assist with workflow
Order business cards.
Ensure the student information system is accurate and up to date.
Customer Service
Answers phone calls and provides information about the school or directs calls to the appropriate party.
Checks voicemail and responds to messages in a timely manner.
Coordinate center tours for community.
Setting School Culture
Provides a welcoming environment and staffs the school’s main entrance.
Provides support for school leadership, staff, and students to support student success.
Assists in project/special event support as assigned.
Attends and contributes to all team and professional development meetings.
Maintains a strong building presence.

Qualifications & Basic Job Requirements:
A combination of education and relevant work experience that aligns with the duties of this position.
Bilingual Spanish language skills strongly desired.
A high degree of professionalism and a willingness to make a good first impression.
Empathy for and ability to work with individuals with disabilities and barriers.
Ability to take direction and effectively prioritize activities/tasks/initiatives.
Uses discretion in sharing information.
Ability to gather and analyze data to make informed decisions.

Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
Must be able to work 12 months per year with breaks scheduled throughout the year.
Sensory and Physical Requirements:
Ability to efficiently and effectively perform all functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Environment:
The work is conducted at The Excel Center housed in a partner location at the YMCA. Hours are primarily daytime hours with occasional weekend or evening work.
