ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Baltimore Compost Collective (BCC) is a youth-empowered collective and a Black-owned business building a diverse composting community in Baltimore. BCC offers compost collection service to residences and businesses in Baltimore and converts the material to high-quality compost and soil inputs. By diverting compost from waste streams, we seek to starve the incinerator! Incineration causes community health impacts and environmental damage to everyone in Baltimore, with the impacts felt most in urban communities of color. More than half of municipal waste streams are compostable material! Here at the Wakanda of Baltimore, we turn food scraps into rich compost used to grow fresh produce and build urban food security. We are building an urban agriculture operation and engaging in restoration of an historic building. We are also a youth entrepreneurship program employing local teenagers and training them in workforce skills. Youth workers gain guided, hands-on experience managing a community-scale composting operation and business growth.
