Overview
Solar Project Engineer / Engineering Lead – EOI Jobs in Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand at Sunergy Solar NZ
Title: Solar Project Engineer / Engineering Lead – EOI
Company: Sunergy Solar NZ
Location: Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand
Sunergy Solar is inviting expressions of interest from exceptional engineers who want to play a meaningful part in shaping and delivering commercial solar projects across New Zealand.
This is a rare opportunity for a practical, high-performing engineer to step into a pivotal role spanning design, project delivery, commissioning, technical problem-solving, and the future development of Sunergy’s in-house engineering capability.
For the right person, this role offers a clear pathway toward becoming a key technical and design leader within Sunergy Solar. We are looking for someone who sees complexity as a challenge to solve, not a reason to stop.
At Sunergy, the mindset is not “No”, it’s “How”.
About Sunergy Solar
Sunergy Solar is a leader in commercial and agricultural solar, delivering high-quality, customer-specific energy solutions across New Zealand.
We specialise in commercial-scale systems — designing and delivering projects that maximise performance, financial return, reliability, and long-term asset life.
Our approach is grounded in:
- Quality-first design and installation
- Data-driven system optimisation
- Strong environmental responsibility (Toitū EnviroMark Diamond certified)
- A culture of continuous improvement — Good, Better, Best
About the Role
We are looking for a multi-disciplined engineer with strong electrical capability, practical judgement, and the ability to understand how the different parts of a project interact.
You will be involved across the full project lifecycle — from early feasibility and technical design through to grid connection, construction/installation support, commissioning, performance validation, and ongoing improvement of our systems and processes.
While electrical design will be central to the role, we need someone who can think across the whole project. Structural and mechanical design considerations, installation methodology, serviceability, cost, and long-term performance all influence the right outcome. You will not be expected to certify specialist designs, but you will need the judgement to review technical inputs, identify roadblocks, ask the right questions, and help develop solutions that are practical, compliant, and financially viable.
This person will play an important part in shaping Sunergy’s future design and engineering capability as we grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the technical delivery of commercial and industrial solar PV projects from feasibility and design through to commissioning and performance validation.
- Develop and review electrical designs, including layouts, single line diagrams, CAD drawings, protection considerations, equipment selection, and technical documentation.
- Undertake site assessments and feasibility reviews, including load analysis, system sizing, network constraints, installation methodology, and project viability.
- Coordinate grid connection processes with EDBs, electricity retailers, consultants, and other technical stakeholders.
- Review and interpret structural, mechanical, and site-specific inputs to identify risks, roadblocks, and practical design solutions.
- Provide technical support during planning, installation, testing, commissioning, system configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Investigate, develop, and support emerging energy solutions, including storage, demand flexibility, VPPs, control strategies, energy optimisation, arbitrage, network support, and resilience.
- Help develop Sunergy’s internal engineering standards, design tools, processes, and technical capability as the business grows.
About You
We are looking for a practical, intelligent, and highly capable engineer who can combine strong technical ability with real-world judgement.
The right person will have:
- Strong electrical design capability in commercial or industrial environments.
- Experience with CAD, single line diagrams, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.
- The ability to assess electrical, structural, mechanical, and site-specific inputs.
- Practical judgement — knowing when something is workable, overcomplicated, risky, or likely to create problems on site.
- Confidence with technical reports, designs, standards, specifications, and compliance requirements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to manage key stakeholder relationships, particularly with EDBs, electricity retailers, clients, installers, consultants, and other technical stakeholders.
- A solution-focused mindset, with the ability to step back, see the wider project, and find practical ways forward.
- High ownership, accountability, attention to detail, and pride in the quality of your work.
- The motivation and capability to grow into a technical leadership role as Sunergy’s engineering function develops.
Above all, we are looking for someone with a genuine passion for the industry and for delivering the best outcomes for our clients. That passion should drive you to take ownership and continually look for better ways to design and deliver projects.
Why This Role is Different
This role sits at the centre of design, engineering, and delivery. You will not simply be producing drawings or ticking boxes — you will be helping solve real project challenges, improve how we design and deliver systems, and build capability inside a growing business.
This is an opportunity to help shape not only individual projects, but Sunergy’s long-term engineering capability.
Expression of Interest
We are currently shaping this role and are open to conversations with engineers who want to help build the future of commercial solar in New Zealand.
If you are a practical, high-performing engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and wants to be part of a company focused on quality, integrity, and long-term impact, we would like to hear from you.
