THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $37,782 to $46,650. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate’s education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

This position is primarily responsible for the clerical and secretarial support of one Criminal Justice Specialist/Investigator position. Also, this position administers the Speed Measuring Instrument Program and the Mandatory In-Service Training Program, with the SMI program as the main focus of support.

Key Responsibilities:
Review applications for completeness for probationary and renewal certificate requests from the approximately 11,000 Speed Measuring Instrument (SMI) Operators and Instructors; update database with initial or renewal certification information, along with any address changes.
Review Pre- and Post-Delivery Training Reports for the SMI Operators and Instructors for: Instructor Certification expiration then assign school identification numbers. Enter information in database and generate acknowledgement letter.
Manage and distribute the annual Mandatory In-Service Training (MIST) documentation for over 500 local and state law enforcement agencies.
Maintain accurate files for the assigned programs.
Use of Acadis database platform.
Communication with criminal justice agencies and the public by phone, email, and in-person.
Back-up to the section receptionist: answer incoming phone calls and either answer the questions or direct calls to the appropriate staff; sending and receiving fax transmissions; receiving and opening mail, and assisting visitors.

Selected candidate will undergo a background and records check.

Division Information:
The Training and Standards Division promotes the goal of competence and integrity in the criminal justice professions and private protective professions through employment and certification standards, professional training, and technical assistance. The Division accomplishes this goal through the provision of coordinated staffing support to the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17C), the Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17E), the North Carolina Justice Academy (G. S. 17D), Private Protective Services Board (G. S. 74C) and Alarm Systems Licensing Board (G. S. 74D). In addition, the Division works to promote coordination within the criminal justice system to minimize duplication and effective utilization of current resources.

Criminal Justice Standards is a Section of the Training & Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Justice, which consists of four major units. These include the N.C. Justice Academy (East and West campuses), the Sheriffs’ Standards Section, Private Protective Services and the Criminal Justice Standards Section. This Division provides a consolidated team of agencies and offices whose primary goal is to assure and advance the competence and integrity of the criminal justice professions and the private security and private investigative professions in North Carolina.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Credit for foreign degrees will only be given if verification of degree certification is attached to your application. Transcripts for foreign degrees have to be evaluated by an organization like World Education Services to determine US equivalency.

Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a copy of their DD-214 or discharge orders.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
