Purpose
Support the Zero Waste efforts through training and supervision of student interns, while working on Zero Waste project and event support throughout The University of Texas at Austin and JJ Pickle Research Campus locations.
Responsibilities
Student Supervision – Responsible for all aspects of the student intern program including hiring, training, supervision, and performance feedback.
Program Development and Management – Design, implement, and maintain zero waste initiatives, documentation, and reporting tools. This includes conducting waste audits, moving and labeling waste bins, zero waste event support, and all other programs as needed. Event support includes coordinating sales of consumable supplies, event consultations, training, monitoring waste bins, and transporting waste to dumpster areas.
Education and Outreach – Develop materials and engage students, staff, and faculty to increase diversion on campus. Provide prompt and excellent technical assistance to clients requiring resources or event support. Represent the department professionally in all interactions, including presentations and trainings. This position will spearhead content creation, audience analysis, and campaign execution for the @utzerowaste social media accounts.
Other related duties as assigned. Occasional overtime is required to support organizational goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience with one year of directly related experience working with students or in a sustainability program. Student leadership experience will count toward the one year of experience. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Ability to work in all weather conditions and around bees. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to work with waste, including recycling, landfill, compost, and batteries. Must possess and maintain a valid Class “C” Texas driver’s license. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
More than one year of experience leading students in sustainability programs. Graphic design and social media experience, including the use of Adobe Creative Suite and Canva. Familiarity with Excel, Tableau, and data analysis. Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and good record-keeping. Detail-oriented and ability to prioritize multiple projects.
Driving Required
This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
