The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the State’s leading law enforcement agency with a $220 million budget and 1,350+ employees assigned throughout the State. This position will manage the Deputy Cabinet Secretary/New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Chiefs workload and schedule by providing high-level administrative support, direct supervision of two (2) administrative assistants, and plays a key role in training and overseeing administrative assistants at NMSP district and sub-district offices, and offsite locations throughout the state. This position will ensure efficient operations, effective task delegation and streamlined communication to contribute to the overall effectiveness of administrative functions within the department.

The Office of the Chief Support Manager supervises staff by delegating tasks, approving leave requests, conducting performance evaluations, and recommending disciplinary actions to maintain productivity and compliance. Develops and implements structured procedures to streamline operations, proactively addressing challenges using experience, industry best practices, and research-driven solutions. Establishes strategic objectives and organizational plans to enhance service delivery, ensuring operational efficiency and alignment with agency goals. Conducts analysis and problem-solving to recommend informed actions to agency leadership, supporting data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
How does it get done?
Executive Support and Office Management:
Provide high-level administrative support to the Deputy Chief of Operations, manage schedules, travel, and correspondence, and ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Screen communications and maintain confidentiality while coordinating statewide administrative functions.
Document and Report Oversight:
Review and manage incoming documents and reports for accuracy and timely distribution, ensuring compliance with standards and procedures.
Stakeholder and Constituent Liaison:
Serve as the primary contact for constituents, agencies, and external partners; facilitate clear communication and timely responses on behalf of leadership.
Personnel and Fiscal Administration:
Support HR and payroll processes, assist with staffing actions, and ensure financial transactions align with policy and budgetary requirements.
Research and Special Projects:
Conduct research and data analysis, prepare executive briefings and presentations, and manage special initiatives and meetings.
Staff Supervision and Statewide Coordination:
Supervise administrative staff, handle performance management, and provide guidance and training to ensure consistency across statewide operations

Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or Accounting and two (2) years of directly related job experience in the areas of budgeting, accounting, auditing, purchasing, cash management, and/or financial management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fast-paced law enforcement office setting with exposure to armed law enforcement personnel and confidential information. Extensive use of desktop/laptop computer with multiple visual/video display terminals (VDT). Extensive use of agency-issued cell phone. Ability to operate multipurpose copier/scanner/fax machines. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
