We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Certified Professional Coder (CPT) to join our billing team and contribute to the efficient revenue cycle management of our laboratory services.
Position Overview:
“Laboratory Coding Specialist” is responsible for reviewing and accurately assigning medical codes to laboratory test results, ensuring proper billing and compliance with healthcare regulations by analyzing patient medical records and applying the correct ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes specific to laboratory procedures, while staying updated on coding guidelines and collaborating with healthcare providers to clarify documentation when necessary; essentially translating laboratory test data into standardized codes for accurate reimbursement.
Key Responsibilities:
Reviewing medical records:
Thoroughly examine laboratory reports, patient demographics, and clinical information to extract relevant details for coding. Code assignment:
Accurately assign appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT procedure codes, and HCPCS codes for laboratory tests performed based on established coding guidelines.
Quality control
:
Conduct regular audits to ensure coding accuracy, identify potential errors, and address discrepancies with healthcare providers. Compliance maintenance:
Stay updated on current coding regulations and guidelines, including payer specific rules, to ensure compliant billing practices. Data entry:
Input coded information into electronic health records (EHR) systems, ensuring proper data integrity and timely submission of claims.
Collaboration
with healthcare teams:
Communicate with laboratory technicians, physicians, and billing staff to clarify diagnoses, procedures, and coding issues. Coding research:
Utilize coding manuals, online databases, and other resources to resolve complex coding queries and stay abreast of coding updates.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Medical coding certification:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent credential from a recognized organization. Knowledge of laboratory procedures:
Understanding different types of laboratory tests, specimen collection methods, and their corresponding codes. Medical terminology proficiency:
Strong grasp of medical terminology, anatomy, and disease processes to accurately interpret clinical information.
Attention to detail
:
Ability to meticulously review medical records and identify relevant information for accurate coding.
Analytical skills
:
Capability to analyze complex medical documentation and apply appropriate coding rules. Computer proficiency:
Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and coding software.
Communication skills

Effective communication
with healthcare providers to clarify documentation and address coding concerns.
Work Environment
