Role Summary:
We’re seeking a practical, detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer with strong CAD skills to support design, detailing, and production of steel fabrication projects. The role bridges engineering, shop fabrication, and project coordination to ensure parts and assemblies are manufacturable, compliant, and delivered on time.
Key Responsibilities:
– Create and modify 2D drawings and 3D models for steel structures, assemblies, fixtures, and components using CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).
– Translate engineering requirements and field measurements into fabrication-ready drawings and BOMs.
– Produce detailed shop drawings, cut lists, nesting files, and assembly instructions for fabrication teams.
– Collaborate with estimators, project managers, welders, and shop foremen to resolve design-for-manufacture issues.
– Perform basic structural calculations, tolerance checks, and material selection guidance.
– Review vendor drawings and coordinate approvals.
– Support quality control by inspecting fabricated parts against drawings and documenting discrepancies.
– Participate in field measurements and site visits as needed.
– Maintain CAD libraries, document revisions, and drawing standards.
Required Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
– 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design, preferably within steel fabrication, structural, or heavy manufacturing environments.
– Proficient in SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD (experience with both preferred). Sheet metal and nesting experience a plus.
– Strong understanding of welding, fabrication processes, steel materials, and shop workflows.
– Ability to create clear, manufacturable drawings and communicate technical details to shop personnel.
– Familiarity with GD&T, welding symbols, and common steel codes/standards.
– Strong problem-solving, organization, and communication skills.
– Able to work on-site in a shop environment; valid driver’s license for occasional site visits.
Preferred:
– Experience with CAM/nesting software, plasma/laser cutting file prep.
– Prior hands-on shop or field experience.
– Experience with project management software or ERP for fabrication shops.
