The Department of Pathology at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) has an outstanding opportunity for aTemporary/Hourly UW Student Assistant, working 19.5 hours per week when school is in session, and 40 hours per week during school breaks, for up to six months. This position will perform a variety of clerical tasks relating to Anatomic Pathology. Position requires the ability to be meticulous and attention to detail oriented. Tasks include filing glass slides and paraffin blocks, preparing slides and blocks for archiving, assists with preparing for future slides intake, and general clerical duties such as copying, mail pickup, distribution and running errands for the Pathology materials room and Administrative personnel.

Duties

Pickup from inter department locations, sort, scan, file Pathology slides, blocks, requisitions, and miscellaneous documents without error;

Pickup, sort and distribute department mail and correspondence per daily schedule;

Scanning requisitions, additional reports and documents;

Running errands for department, including frequently picking up/dropping off and distributing mail, packages, specimens, office supplies and other materials;

Prepping Pathology slides and blocks for archiving and/or disposition;

Assist with slide room organization;

Completing requests for slides/blocks from staff and faculty, including pulling, tracking, delivering, and shipping;

Assist with requests for consult slides to be sent to requesting physician within and outside of the University of Washington system, including pulling, tracking, and report printing;

Pathology slide/blocks returns to outside facility;

Locate slides and blocks within faculty, resident and fellow offices and spaces;

Operate office equipment such as computer, copier and fax machine;

Perform electronic mail tasks;

Photocopy and collate material as requested;

Other related duties as assigned by Program coordinator and Program Supervisor as required

Employment Eligibility

In accordance with UW Employment and Administrative Policies, Chapter 104, Student Employees, to hold an appointment in one of the covered student job titles a student must be enrolled at the University of Washington and meet the following minimum enrollment requirements (not including correspondence credits):

Undergraduate students – 6 credits

Graduate and professional students – 4 credits

Ph.D. candidates working on dissertations – 2 credits

Granted “on leave” status

Minimum 6 months clerical work experience required.

Desired

Knowledge of medical terminology

Able to set priorities and be flexible; can accomplish work despite frequent interruptions and changing work priorities

Numerical filing and recordkeeping experience

Proven attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and follow-up, and ability to work independently with minimum supervision

High degree of patience and easy going/positive attitude with ability to handle long periods of daily repetitive work
